With lyrics by Tim Rice and music composed by Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson of ABBA fame, Chess is a musical that explores the tensions of the Cold War in the 1980s. The story focuses on the rivalry between two chess players, Freddie Trumper (Hayden Cheyne) form the United States and his Soviet Russian challenger, Anatoly Sergievsky (Jack West) as the compete in an intense and politically driven chess tournament.
Tensions don’t just lie in the match, however, as both men attempt to win the affections of Freddie’s second, the Hungarian-born, English-raised Florence Vassy (Helen Crees) whilst Anatoly’s second, Molotov (Duncan Taylor-Jones), has motives of a different kind.
Songs include One Night in Bangkok and I Know Him So Well.
