We have been bringing high quality musical theatre to Lewes since 1911 when Lewes Operatic Society was formed. A change of name was agreed in 2015, maintaining our heritage by keeping the ‘LOS’ abbreviation, whilst looking to the future by adding the more apt ‘Musical Theatre’.
Staging our productions involves a lot of hard work for a cast and crew of about 80. In fact the society is made up of about 200 members of all ages and from all walks of life. We stage two productions each year, usually at Lewes Town Hall. In the past we have also toured local villages and we even take shows to our twin towns of Blois in France and Waldshut in Germany. The society often puts on concerts and performs at functions too.
Recent shows have included Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical JR., Little Shop of Horrors, Betty Blue Eyes, Hello, Dolly!, Sweet Charity and Grease.
New members are always welcome! Besides performing, there’s lots to do behind the scenes and loads of social events throughout the year – trips to see West End shows, country walks with pub lunches, stoolball and dwyle-flunking matches, summer garden parties, a Christmas dinner-dance, quiz nights etc.. There is a members’ bar, which is open for most rehearsals and any social events held in our headquarters at the Market Tower. For show week the bar, much expanded, transfers to the Town Hall and extra help is always much appreciated.
So, whether or not you are a seasoned performer there is something in LOS Musical Theatre for you
